Doris Gould

Doris Carlberg Gould, Beloved wife of William H. Gould, of Cincinnati, OH, died at age 88, on October 3, 2014. Doris was born to the late Rev. Gustav and Ida Carlberg, on December 12, 1925, in Central China. Born to Lutheran missionaries, Doris spent her first 11 years growing up in Wuhan, China before returning to the United States during a missionary furlough. The Sino-Japanese war and later World War II prevented her return to China so she continued her schooling in Lake Worth, FL, High School, graduating in 1943, and later graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, in 1948. Doris married Orville Orbom at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, just after graduating in 1948. They lived in Greater Pittsburgh, PA and later Greater Boston, MA. She continued her work in the church as she took on the roles of chairman of the Junior Woman's club religions of the world. In Bethesda Lutheran Church she was adviser on the Education Committee and President of East Conference United Lutheran Church Women. She sang in the choir. During this time Orville and Doris added two boys, Mark and Ted, to the family and she embraced the role of Mom. When her husband Orville died in December of 1965, Doris and her boys moved to Palm Springs FL, She returned to school and completed her Masters in Social Work at Barry University with ACSW certification. She proceeded to work as a professional Mental Health Clinician at Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center, South Florida. Doris continued raising her children but kept up with her church work by teaching Adult Sunday School in the Lutheran Church and serving as Training Coordinator for Widowed Persons Service, a volunteer outreach to widowed men and women. She continued her role as Mom to her sons and even made time to pursue a hobby, along with her children, becoming an avid bowler. Doris met and then married William H Gould in July of 1981. She moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a member of Nothminster Presbyterian Church and was involved in the woman's circles both there and Faith Lutheran Church in Finneytown. Doris will be especially remembered for being an enthusiastic Cincinnati Reds sports fan, lifelong swimmer and bowler. At Northminster Church, she also served as a volunteer for the Knot Club children's ministries, loved organizing and decorating for annual Mother - Daughter banquets, played in the hand bell choir, served on the board of Welcome House, a ministry to the homeless in Northern KY. served as a Stephens Minister, and Church Elder. Doris and William were also active in the Scandinavian Society of Cincinnati and acted as the community host for a couple from China. She loved organizing and decorating for elaborate dinners for the Gould family members during Holidays and special occasions. Doris affectionately had the grandchildren and great grandchildren call her "Nainai" (Chinese for Grandmother). Her additional hobby was world traveling. Travel highlights include Sweden, Norway, riding on the Orient Express from Moscow to China, sailing a trimaran in Chesapeake Bay, Cruising to Antarctica, Summers in Alaska, and visiting Machu Picchu. In May, 2011 Doris and William moved from Finneytown to Evergreen Retirement Community in Hartwell , Ohio. She continued to attend Northminster Church, followed the Cincinnati Reds, as well as stayed in contact with family and friends until her death. Doris is preceded in death by her Parents, Gustav and Ida Carlberg; her first husband, Orville Orbom; and her brother, Ansgar, at the age of two and a half in China. She is survived by her children: Mark and his wife Donna, and Ted Orbom and Hevia Collatto; her sister Inez ( Carlberg) Schneider; step children Stan and his wife Faith, Norm and his wife Linda, John, and David and his wife Suzanne Gould; Grandchildren: Randolph Gould and Amamda Bucker, Aaron, Keith, Daniel and Benjamin Gould in Cincinnati ;Rosemary Gould , Avery Stites, and Anna Stites in North Carolina, and Johnny and Brianna Steel in Florida. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Aiden, Cierra, Kailie, Matthew, Dominic Gould and Athena Steel. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to the Family Life Center at Northminster Church, 513-931-0243. A memorial service celebrating Doris' life, with a reception afterward, will be held on October 25, 2014, 1:00 PM, at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 703 Compton Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45231. Her remains will rest at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH.
